On June 29, 1921, Hongqiao Airport issued an announcement on the opening of Shanghai, marking the beginning of a century-old history of Shanghai Airport. In 1998, Shanghai Airport Corporation (SAG) was established and authorized by the Shanghai State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission (SASAC) to operate and manage Pudong and Hongqiao airports in a unified manner. At present, Shanghai Airport has developed into a world-class aviation hub with two major airports, with an annual passenger and cargo throughput of more than 100 million passengers and 4 million tons.
Shanghai Airport is the leading airport in Asia in terms of route connectivity, connecting 48 countries and 281 destinations around the world. The international passenger and cargo throughput accounts for about 1/4 and 1/2 of the total number of airports in the country respectively, and the air cargo and mail carries 40% of the value of the import and export goods of Shanghai port with less than 1% of the cargo volume, making positive contributions to the economic and social development of the city.
