Markus Bieswanger is a Full Professor at the University of Bayreuth, Germany, and currently a research scholar at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. Numerous publications and presentations document his long-standing research interest in communication and language in aviation. He has provided expertise as a consultant to airlines and air traffic control providers, and served on the ICAO Exploratory Group – Language Proficiency Requirements from 2022 to 2024. He has been plenary speaker at several aviation-related conferences, most recently giving the opening keynote at the annual conference of the International Civil Aviation English Association in Hong Kong in 2024. Since August 2024, he has been the organizer of a global research network, officially acknowledged by the International Association of Applied Linguistics, bringing together experts on communication and language use in aviation contexts from five different continents.
