Tom Costello is an NBC News Correspondent based in Washington, D.C., reporting for TODAY, NBC Nightly News, MSNBC, and NBC NewsNOW. Costello joined NBC News in 2004 after spending eight years at CNBC in London and New York. Since 2005, he has since served as the network's lead aviation and space correspondent, while also covering a range of other topics including cybersecurity and economics.
Among his recent high-profile assignments: The mid-air crash of an American Eagle regional jet and U.S. Army helicopter over Washington, Boeing’s 737 MAX investigations, the ongoing search for Malaysian Airlines flight 370, Captain Sully’s Miracle on the Hudson, the loss of the Titan submersible in the North Atlantic, and the New Race to Space.
In 2023, Costello’s NBC team joined a Norwegian/NATO patrol tracking Russian submarines in the North Sea. His documentaries have also taken viewers behind-the-scenes at NASA, Space Force, and Space Command. Costello was the first journalist to receive the National Air Traffic Controller Association's Sentinel of Safety Award for his reporting on aviation. His long list of honors also includes national and regional Emmys, Edward R Murrow, SPJ, and National Headliner awards.
Costello holds a bachelor's degree in Broadcast Journalism from the University of Colorado/Boulder, a master’s degree in International Commerce from Boston University/Brussels, and a certificate in Cybersecurity Risk Management from HarvardX. Originally from Colorado, he now lives in Washington D.C. with his wife, Astrid Boon of Brussels, Belgium. They have two grown daughters.
