CASH: In Japan, the official currency is the Japanese Yen (JPY). Visitors can exchange foreign currencies for JPY cash at currency exchange counters located at major airports, banks, hotels, and select exchange offices throughout the country.
When entering or leaving Japan, you must declare if you are carrying cash or other means of payment (such as traveler’s checks) exceeding 1,000,000 JPY (or its equivalent in foreign currency). There is no limit to the amount of money you can bring into Japan; however, amounts exceeding 1,000,000 JPY must be declared to customs authorities.
Although Japan has become more card-friendly in recent years, cash is still widely used, especially at small restaurants, local shops, temples, and in rural areas. It is recommended to carry some cash at all times.
MOBILE: Mobile payments are increasingly accepted in Japan, particularly in major cities such as Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto.
Popular domestic mobile payment apps include:
-
PayPay
-
LINE Pay
-
Rakuten Pay
International mobile payment options such as Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Samsung Pay are also accepted at many locations, particularly where contactless credit card payments are supported.
Setting Up Mobile Payments
Download the App: Download your preferred mobile payment app (e.g., PayPay, LINE Pay, Rakuten Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Pay) from your app store and follow the registration instructions.
Add Your Card: Link your credit or debit card to the app. Most major international cards are accepted, including Mastercard, Visa, and American Express.
Authorization: When adding an international bank card, authorization from the issuing bank may be required. If the request is declined, contact your bank’s customer service for assistance.
Using Mobile Payments
QR Code Payments: Many merchants in Japan accept QR code payments. Simply scan the QR code displayed by the merchant using your mobile payment app and confirm the payment.
Contactless Payments: You can use contactless payment methods by tapping your mobile device at compatible payment terminals. Look for contactless payment symbols at checkout.
Transaction Limits and Fees
Transaction Limits: Limits may be set by your issuing bank or the mobile payment app. Check your app’s terms and conditions for specific details.
Service Fees: Some mobile payment services may charge fees depending on your bank or card issuer. Review your bank’s foreign transaction fee policy before traveling.
Supported E-Wallets
Many retailers, particularly in urban areas and major shopping centers, support international e-wallets and contactless payments, including:
-
Apple Pay
-
Google Pay
-
Samsung Pay
-
Alipay
-
WeChat Pay
Because acceptance varies by location, it is advisable to carry both a physical card and some cash during your stay in Japan.

The electric current in Japan is 100V, 50/60 Hz (50 Hz in eastern Japan, including Tokyo, and 60 Hz in western Japan, including Osaka and Kyoto). Japan uses Type A and Type B plugs, which have two flat parallel pins (Type B includes a grounding pin). Most hotels provide hair dryers, and many modern hotels offer USB charging ports or universal outlets, but built-in converters in bathrooms are uncommon—travelers with 110–240V devices should bring a voltage converter if needed.
