Historically, safety leadership and safety culture have acknowledged that some circumstances are unforeseeable, and that leaders must help their organizations learn from their mistakes. Effective safety leaders recognize that punishment for reasonable mistakes is counterproductive and that when an organization learns from its mistakes, its performance will improve. Today, leaders must help organizations learn not just from what goes wrong, but also from what goes right, and motivate organizations to keep improving with innovative advances in processes and procedures that will deliver robust safety and reliability.

Advanced computing and artificial intelligence (AI) techniques are already being actively explored to improve aviation safety processes. Some of these approaches enable the incorporation of new data streams for monitoring safety performance and factors that could affect safety of flight, yet not all of those data streams are fully understood or currently formulated as part of a safety data collection activity. Other advanced computing/AI techniques are being explored to help us make sense of the relationships between hazards and their potential exposure to operations.

Airports are busier every year, and the added traffic means increased chances of runway incursions, runway excursions, and collisions between aircraft on the ground. Few new airports are being built, so existing airports must become more innovative about accommodating more aircraft. Runway incursions and excursions are high-risk occurrences because of their frequency and the potential for catastrophic outcomes. Systems and procedures can be put in place to address the problem, but human action is key. In this session, panelists will provide insight on how systems and procedures can be enhanced to improve runway safety.
